Founder Feature: Jennifer Aks-Neuman

A Q&A With herStories Founder Jennifer Aks-Neuman

Like so many of us, the communities that I love were shut down and I was called to pivot.

We recently met with story producer, artist, photographer, and movement coach Jennifer Aks-Neuman, and were blown away by her work and mission, which so closely aligns with our own. After a career spent working with children in inner-city public schools, using art to help them express themselves and blossom, Jennifer has recently turned her passions to women, and to women’s stories. Her core mission is “to empower womxn to amplify their voices by sharing their stories so that we can deepen our connection and compassion around the world.” She’s created a 501C3 non-profit called HerStories, where she works individually with womxn from all walks of life to curate short 3-6 minute long video diaries of their lives, using all forms of expression.

A Q&A with Jennifer:

What led you to create herStories?

The pandemic and all of my passions.  Like so many of us, the communities that I love were shut down and I was called to pivot.  I put every career path, which luckily enough is filled with passion, into 1 thing…. curating a collection of video diaries for womxn.

What's your typical process for creating a video?

Session #1: Approx. 60-90 minutes.

  • Share: We have a conversation about herStory
  • Reflect: We reflect and determine the core emotions that live inside herStory
  • Embody: A gesture is created & embodied to represent each emotion

Session #2:  Approx 15-20 minutes

  • Reconnect: Feedback & further edits are discussed

Session #3: Approx 15-20 minutes

  • Conclude: We celebrate herStory

What do the women you feature use the videos for?

  • Entrepreneurs/Influencers use this video as a way to deepen their connection with their community by sharing their journey and how they arrived in a unique and very special way.
  • A self reflection tool for healing, recognizing resilience & celebration
  • A gift for a loved one
  • A group story with friends or for someone special
  • As a way to be a part of the movement to deepen compassion, understanding and empathy around the world.

What has surprised you the most about the experience of making these videos?

I have been most surprised by the community's reaction and response to the collection of diaries.  Originally, I was focused on each Womxn individually, but very  quickly I felt the power of the Womxn seeing one another's story. I responded by creating “Let’s Celebrate Womxn”, a virtual gallery that I host every 3 months.  The purpose for these galleries is to bring the community together so that they have an opportunity to witness and share in real time.

Where can we find you? (website, social handles, etc.)
