Location: Brooklyn & East Hampton
My background is in book publishing. I spent 18 years running two different companies that I founded, one as a foreign scout and the second as a literary agent. Then I got divorced and decided to re-think my whole life. I got a Masters in Narrative Medicine at Columbia and spent three years consulting at a giant Brooklyn hospital called Maimonides in end-of-life care and healthcare communication. During this period I also started publishing some personal essays and created a Facebook group called What Would Virginia Woolf Do? as a place for my friends and I to talk about the realities of aging in both an honest and self-deprecating / funny way. That group grew to be huge, became a now-defunct social platform/website called The Woolfer, and that eventually merged/was acquired by Revel, where I am currently the Chief Creative Officer managing programming, partnerships, and content. Which I love! I’m also the board chair of The Brooklyn Public Library, where I’ve served as a trustee since 2009, and I manage the literary estate of my late mother, the brilliant filmmaker and writer Kathleen Collins.
Sleep! Take my adorable poodle Strudel for long walks. Listen to music and enjoy meals curated (and made!) by my lovely partner. Facetime with my beautiful four twentysomething children. Exercise. Read a ton. Make fires. Drink tequila.
I’m not sure it really keeps me up at night, but the political divisions in this country make me feel really sad. Racial and economic inequality and how they affect children in particular is also devastating.
Peepers. The absolute best and most affordable reading glasses I’ve discovered to date. I practically buy them in bulk. Black, Center Stage Focus. And I’m not being paid to say this; it’s true.
That’s a hard one because I’m truly always reading like 3 books at once and I skim whatever I don’t love. The last book I read pretty much from start to finish without stopping was Katie Kitamura’s Intimacies. Loved it.
Probably shopping, particularly for anything furry, or in a leopard pattern. And shoes and bags are so easy because you don’t have to really try them on!
Eminence. So pure, smells so fantastic. Obsessed.
It’s not sexy or neuroscience: I’ve found that I feel best now if I do strength training regularly, eat pretty much only protein and fruits and vegetables, drink green tea and water all day long, and sleep a ton. I still can’t give up wine and tequila, because a girl has to have some pleasures.
My hosting philosophy is to only host things that I really want to do. I use the Revel platform to motivate myself to do things that will enhance my own life, like plan a really hard hike, or an ice skating night, or a day to visit art, or a documentary club. Then whoever shows up to join me is pure bonus. It’s fabulous!
