The Many Virtues of Our Beloved Coconut Oil

It has myriad home and beauty uses!

Lastly, don’t forget your pets! Use it to moisturize their skin/fur and in their diets for many of the same health benefits we humans gain.

If you’ve been a Reveler for more than five minutes, you’ve heard us talk about coconut oil, which we love as a warrior in the fight against age-related vaginal dryness.

But did you know it has myriad other home and beauty uses? To wit:

In addition to making an excellent base for homemade face cream and soap, coconut oil can be used to polish wood and to moisturize leather (whether vaginal or otherwise, yikes!). Apply with a soft cloth and buff to a rich luster.

There’s also “oil pulling:” Practitioners swear by it as a way to both improve dental health (its antibacterial qualities help fight gingivitis and cure bad breath) and also as a way to clear the body of toxins to improve overall health and fight heart disease! Coconut oil reputedly fights inflammation and candida, and makes a brilliant non-toxic insect repellent.

But back to beauty treatments: we love coconut oil when it’s mixed with sugar or salt and a few drops of essential oil to make a fragrant (and edible!) body scrub. It’s an excellent massage oil, and a great treatment for your hair: use for split ends, dry scalp, dandruff, and even removing gum and difficult tangles. On its own or paired with our other new fave, baking soda, it also makes an effective deodorant!

With its antibacterial properties and vitamins A and E, coconut oil makes a great healing balm for scrapes and other minor wounds—mix with lavender or tea tree oil to complement the effect. Rub it into your cuticles, too,  and your nails while you’re at it! Calluses will decline or even disappear with regular use; seal the deal by wearing gloves or socks over treated areas.

Ever heard of MCTs (medium-chain triglycerides)? We hadn’t either, but it turns out they help the body treat coconut oil more like a quick energy source versus storing it as fat. As a result, proponents link coconut oil to higher metabolism, raising HDL, and even improving brain health! Check out Brain Octane Oil, which many women swear by—a tablespoon a day in your coffee, smoothie, or salad. You can also use coconut oil as a potentially healthier replacement for butter in many dishes and even to butter your toast. Sugar free chocolate with coconut oil sounds like a winner, too—this recipe is sweetened with maple syrup and enhanced by toasted coconut flakes.  It’s also great for recipes that call for frying in oil. With its high share of saturated fat, coconut oil burns at a higher temp than other oils like canola or olive, making it an excellent choice for anything you want to fry.

While we’re on the subject, did you know that coconut water has a super high concentration of electrolytes? It is thus among the most hydrating beverages you can drink, which explains its popularity at many gyms these days.

For those of you who aren’t sure how to use coconut oil to relieve vaginal dryness, here’s our favorite method: use 2 or 3 fingers to scoop about a tablespoonful out of the tub. Before it melts, stand with your legs apart (raise a foot or slightly squat for easier access), and use those fingers to insert the goop all the way into your vagina. Spread the melting oil around, inside and out. Don’t be shy; it’s your body and it needs you! Repeat morning and night to help increase elasticity, combat painful sex, and generally keep things moist and pleasant in your lady parts.

Note:  Coconut oil is high in saturated fat, which the AHA and other medical professionals recommend restricting for those with high cholesterol and certain other conditions.  Check with your doctor before adding it to your diet! Also, coconut oil cannot be used with latex condoms because it can break down the latex and cause the condom to break. Lastly, there are some rare cases of infections related to coconut oil. We’re not doctors, so consult with yours before trying anything new down there.
